Event Details

The Canterbury FIDE Standard is a chess tournament taking place in November 2025 at the University of Kent. The event features two sections:

  • FIDE Open Standard (Friday 21 – Sunday 23 November)
  • FIDE U1800 Standard (Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 November)

Entries are limited, so early registration is strongly recommended.

  • Entry fee: £20 for ECF Gold/Platinum members, plus £12 for others.
  • From 9 November 2025, the fee increases to £25.

Withdrawal policy: Withdraw up to one week before the event for a full refund, allowing waiting list players to take your place.

Prize Money

Prize funds depend on the number of entries in each section:

  • Up to 50% of total entries allocated to the Open Section (including a guaranteed £200 for 1st prize)
  • Up to 40% allocated to the U1800 Section (including a guaranteed £150 for 1st prize)

Final figures will be confirmed by Sunday 9 November 2025 and published on both the Congress website and the Chess-Results website.

Accommodation

Four-star campus accommodation (B&B), graded by Visit England, is available at the Canterbury campus. Reasonable prices are offered and group discounts may be available. Please check the Congress website for updates before booking.

FIDE Open Standard Section

This event is part of the British Championship Qualifying Grand Prix. For full details, see the British Championship Qualifier Grand Prix rules.

Time Control: All moves in 90 minutes, plus 30 seconds per move from move one. Default time: 30 minutes.

Byes: Players may request one half-point bye, excluding the final round.

FIDE U1800 Standard Section

Time Control: All moves in 30 minutes, plus 30 seconds per move from move one.

Eligibility: Players must have a FIDE Standard rating under 1800 (November 2025 list).
